Roque (pronounced "Rocky") is a magnificent young tiger living in a special wildlife sanctuary in Bannerghatta, India. He is protected and cared for by the Born Free Foundation, who raise money to care for him and many other wild cats through adoption schemes.

Roque had a rough childhood, seperated from his mother at just a few days old he was put on sale in a Spanish pet shop, displayed alone, bewildered, terrified and crying in a tiny glass tank for anyone to buy and do with as they pleased.

Fortune smiled on him when an undercover Born Free investigator discovered the young tiger and launched a rescue operation bringing Roque to a special big cat sanctuary based near to us in Kent, UK.

This was only a temporary measure though; whilst a vast improvement in conditions adult tigers roam vast areas in the wild and the small sanctuary in Kent's largest enclosures were only 2000 square metres. Orphaned at such a young age Roque would almost certainly die if released back into the real wild though, so an alternative had to be found, both for Roque and the other tigers in the Foundation's care.

Funds were gathered and deals set up to open a 9 acre facility in India; taking the tigers back to their homeland and natural habitat, and offering them an environment as close to the wild as it's possible to acheive; once doomed to an uncertain future in a glass tank Roque now enjoys a large forested enclosure full of rocks to climb on, sandy soil to roll about in, trees to lurk in, and a deep pool to cool off in, and even though he spent many of his early years in the care of people, the return to a natural environment has given him space to develop into a true wild animal with a healthy suspicion of his human neighbours and an uncanny ability to materialise as if by magic from amongst the undergrowth.

We have a vested interested in the natural world and a particular admiration for cats who have long protected our projects from sea demons and the black plague as our official mascots, they typify the entire meaning of independence and are as close to evolutionary perfection as a predator is ever likely to get.

Born Free is an amazing UK based organisation (founded by the movie actors Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna shortly after making the famous film) that works tirelessly to rescue wild animals from cruel and confined lives in captivity in zoos and pet shops, and return them to wild and natural environments or the wild itself; the Foundation has been a great success and constantly expands it's interests to protect species from any kind of threat; vaccinating wolves from rabies, campaigning against the ivory trade, funding ranger schemes in war zones, stopping Disney from abusing lion cubs; any persecution of animals is battled.

It gives us great pleasure to be one of the official adoptive parents of this spectacular tiger and we'd urge you to adopt an animal (cats, wolves, bears, elephants, orca, or primates) or become a member of the organisation today; unlike some charities they offer very affordable ways to get involved, as well as volunteering opportunities from letter writing to active involvement; go there now and help preserve our world's wildlife in a wild environment.
